Why Now?
The longer you delay, the longer the person will suffer. If your loved one is genuinely exhibiting patterns of addiction and destruction, they will most likely not snap out of it on their own. Putting off helping them hurts them and everyone around them.
Why Me?
If not you, then who else? Love is a verb. Be careful not to fall into the entrapment of the delusional system.
I've heard of people who simply turn themselves in for treatment.
It's possible, but not probable. What you're wondering about is something we call spontaneous insight, which isn't really spontaneous at all. Also, when a person gets to the point that they turn themselves in, it is usually following an episode of extreme destruction or chaos. Don't wait for someone to lose their life or freedom or to cause someone else to lose theirs before you make the effort to help.
Wouldn't intervention look like interference in his or her private life?
It's not rude to help someone who is ill. It is not cruel to save someone's life. In fact, intervention, conducted in a skilled and loving environment, is a profound act of caring.
I don't like the idea of going behind someone's back.
Intervention is the opposite of secretive. In truth, it helps everyone from each concerned individual who participates in the intervention, to the chemically dependent individual.

"I don't think anyone believes that there is a time when they will need the services of an interventionist. You're confused as to who to turn to for help when the person you love is in trouble. The moment you meet Chris there is a subtle process that begins. He asks important questions, listens intently and quickly gets a grasp of your unique situation. He meets the family and friends involved in the intervention and gets them to focus on the task at hand and help put aside any unresolved feelings of anger or uncertainty..."

Intervention Systems believes that chemical dependency is a disease as defined by The American Medical Association.
Therefore, we believe that like any disease, the diseases of drug addiction and alcoholism are treatable. Early detection is the key to successful treatment of any illness. Intervention Systems is committed to doing everything within its power to find and translate useful information and resources into both preventative and corrective solutions. Our goal is to reduce the incidence of the disease of alcoholism, drug addiction, and related problems.
